On Botox and Dysport: A Friendly Guide and Comparison

For those considering cosmetic treatments in Burlington, two names consistently rise to the top: Botox and Dysport. Both are FDA-approved neurotoxin injectables, both are used to smooth wrinkles and fine lines, and both have established track records of safety and efficacy.

Yet despite their similarities, Botox and Dysport are not interchangeable, and understanding the differences between them can assist in making more informed decisions.

At Veltori Hair & Aesthetics, we offer both Botox and Dysport, starting with a consultation with Judy, our medical injector. In this blog post, we explain what these cosmetic treatments are, their key differences and the general procedures, so that you are informed as to your options.

What are Botox and Dysport?

Botox is the brand name for onabotulinumtoxinA, a purified form of botulinum toxin type A derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It functions by temporarily interrupting the nerve signals responsible for muscle contractions, which relaxes the targeted muscles and reduces the appearance of overlying wrinkles.

Botox received FDA approval for cosmetic use in 2002 and remains the most widely recognized injectable treatment of its kind.

Dysport is the brand name for abobotulinumtoxinA, a distinct formulation of the same botulinum toxin type A. Dysport was granted FDA approval for cosmetic use in 2009. It operates through the same mechanism as Botox — relaxing targeted facial muscles to soften wrinkles — but differs in meaningful ways that can influence clinical outcomes.

The Greatest Differences

While Botox and Dysport share a common mechanism of action, several important distinctions exist between the two that can affect which treatment is most appropriate for a given patient.

Note: For most differences not mentioned below, Botox and Dysport do not meaningfully differ.

1. Molecular Size and Diffusion

The most clinically significant difference in the Botox vs Dysport comparison is diffusion — the degree to which each product spreads from its injection site.

Dysport's smaller protein molecule allows it to diffuse more broadly after injection. Botox, with its larger protein complex, remains more localized to the site of administration. Of course, neither characteristic is inherently superior; the optimal choice depends on the treatment area.

For larger, flatter muscle groups such as the forehead, Dysport's wider diffusion can be advantageous, enabling thorough coverage with fewer injection points. For smaller or more anatomically complex areas, such as the crow's feet or the perioral region, Botox's more controlled placement is generally preferred. Many Burlington providers select between Botox and Dysport based precisely on this consideration.

2. Onset of Results

Dysport typically produces visible results more quickly than Botox. Most patients notice improvement from Dysport within 2 to 3 days of treatment, while Botox generally requires 4 to 7 days before results become apparent, with the full effect sometimes taking up to two weeks to develop.

For Burlington patients with time-sensitive goals, such as preparing for an upcoming event, this difference in onset may be a meaningful factor in the treatment decision.

3. Treatment Areas

Importantly, Botox and Dysport differ in suitable/common treatment areas. Specifically, Botox is quite versatile, being commonly used on:

  • Forehead lines

  • Crow’s feet

  • Around the lips

  • Frown lines

Dysport is perhaps a bit less versatile, being commonly used on:

  • Glabellar lines (especially for more pronounced rather than mild lines)

  • Forehead wrinkles

4. Duration of Results

Both Botox and Dysport produce results that typically last 3 to 4 months, after which a follow-up treatment is needed to maintain the effect. Individual results vary depending on factors such as metabolism, muscle mass, and the specific area treated.

Some patients find that one product offers marginally longer-lasting results for them personally, though neither Botox nor Dysport has a consistently demonstrated advantage in duration across the general patient population.

5. Protein Load and Antibody Resistance

Botox carries a higher protein load than Dysport. Over time, a small subset of patients may develop antibodies that reduce the effectiveness of one formulation. In such cases, transitioning to the alternative product — from Botox to Dysport, or vice versa — may restore responsiveness.

Patients who observe diminishing results from their current treatment are encouraged to discuss this possibility with their Burlington provider.

6. Dosing

Dysport and Botox units are not equivalent. Therefore, differences aside, more Dysport units are often needed for an equivalent treatment to that with Botox (and this holds true in practice).

However, this doesn’t necessarily make Dysport more expensive or worse than Botox; Dysport units are priced lower than those of Botox, and the unit differences can be thought of as the result of Dysport diffusing more widely than Botox. A skilled Burlington provider will understand the appropriate dosages to ensure safe and effective results.

The Procedures

The treatment experience for both Botox and Dysport is substantially the same. Both are minimally invasive, require no general anesthesia, and involve no significant recovery period.

Prior to treatment, the provider will conduct a medical history review, discuss the patient's aesthetic goals, and identify the specific muscle groups to be addressed. A topical numbing cream may be applied for comfort, though most patients find the injections well-tolerated without it.

During treatment, the provider administers the product using a fine-gauge needle at precise points along the target muscles. Depending on the number of areas being treated, the procedure typically takes between 15 and 30 minutes, making it well-suited to patients with limited time.

Following treatment, patients may return to their usual activities with minimal restrictions. Providers generally recommend avoiding vigorous physical activity, lying flat, or applying pressure to the treated area for several hours post-injection. Mild redness, bruising, or temporary swelling at the injection sites may occur but typically resolves within a day or two.

Both Botox and Dysport are available at medical spas, dermatology offices, and plastic surgery practices throughout Burlington and the surrounding region.

Botox vs. Dysport: Which is the Right Choice?

For the majority of patients, both Botox and Dysport are appropriate and effective options. The best choice depends on individual anatomy, treatment goals, and the clinical judgment of the provider.

As a general guide:

  • Botox is often preferred for precise, localized treatment — particularly in areas around the eyes and mouth.

  • Dysport may be more suitable for broader treatment areas, such as the forehead, or for patients who prioritize a faster onset of results.

Ultimately, the most consequential factor is not the product itself, but the skill and experience of the injector. Burlington patients are encouraged to seek out board-certified providers with demonstrated expertise in neurotoxin treatments. A qualified injector will achieve consistently strong outcomes with either product.
